Contemporary Pegeia
Pegeia is undoubtedly a noteworthy region in Cyprus. More specifically, it is a newly formed municipality in the prefecture of Paphos, which was declared a municipality in 1994. It is worth noting that Pegeia is recognized as one of the largest municipalities in Cyprus, as it covers 4,552 hectares. The administrative extent of Pegeia reaches Lara bay at north and the Potimes area at south, and the Mavrokolymbos dam.
As regards the geographical position of Pegeia, it is deemed quite positive. It lies at a mere 15 kilometers from the center of Paphos, close to the beautiful Akamas and it is a meeting point for locals and foreign visitors alike. The fact that the village is nested on the slope of a mountain at an altitude of 200 meters, allows for a covetable panoramic view towards the west coast of the island, as well as towards the center of Paphos. This combination of mountainous and maritime surroundings, as well as the mild climate of the region, give it an incomparable advantage.
On one hand, the endless blue of the sea, surrounding the beautiful, fine beaches, the exotic green color of the banana trees, the multiple colors of citrus trees, vines and almond trees, the wild beauty of carobs and olive trees; and on the other hand, lies the forest with its shady pines and cypresses. The region is a place of cultivation for various kinds of vegetables, principally potatoes, watermelons, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and artichokes. The small national forest of Meleti as well as a large part of the national forest of Pegeia belong inside the administrative boundaries of the tour. So, these unique touches of nature grace the residents with an endless source of life and calmness.
The main activity of residents is tourism, followed by agriculture and livestock breeding. In 1985, banana plantations occupied a surface of 119 hectares and it was the largest in the Paphos prefecture, as well as in all of Cyprus. Apart from agriculture, livestock breeding also developed, mostly goats and sheep. 2,073 goats, 2,832 sheep, 60 pigs and 1,690 chickens were bred in 1985. However, special importance is paid today to tourism and the provision of services. Thanks to its beautiful, green scenery, its picturesque beaches and notable archaeological sites, Pegeia has begun developing from a tourism point of view. The epicenter of touristic movement is the area of the Coral bay.
The arrival of tourists, mainly from the United Kingdom, has undoubtedly contributed to the creation of numerous restaurants, traditional taverns, recreation centers, hotels, touristic complexes, villas, etc., all of which promise to the visitor, be it foreign or local, a comfortable stay in this enchanting region. On the other hand, construction of residences continues at an accelerated pace, while the tourism industry and the service sector are rebuilding their forces, in order to further improve the quality of services rendered.
Pegeia can be considered a cosmopolitan region, as the residents who are not born in Pegeia outnumber those born here. A most important sing of this mix is the participation of a member from the foreign Community on the municipal council, following the municipal elections of 2006.
